Paleo Substitutes: Peanut Butter

[This blog post is a series on Paleo substitues for foods that you love to consume but aren’t Paleo friendly.]

WHAT!?!?! Isn’t peanuts allowed on the paleo diet? Aren’t they a nut?

Nope, they are not. Peanut is not a nut but a legume. We don’t want to eat peanuts because it contains lectins and they are commonly linked with inflammatory and digestive diseases for people. Also, peanut butter is filled with a lot of additives, hydrogenated oils, and lots of sugar.

So what’s a good substitute?

You can trade out your peanut butter for almond butter. My favorite brands are Trader Joe’s.

Recently, there has been more variety and availability of almond butter out there like Maranatha or Target’s Archer Farms almond butter.

Another great substitute is Sunflower seed butter like Sunbutter.

This is available at your local grocery or Target store. Even Trader Joe’s  has their own sunflower seed butter.

The consistency of sunflower butter is very similar to peanut butter except it is lighter. This is a very good substitute. It does have sugar but Sunbutter brands do have a unsweetened version of it.

So there you go, there are your substitutes for peanut butter. Lastly, don’t think you can eat tubs of almond and sunflower seed butter and think you can lose weight. If you are looking to lean out or lose weight, then you are allowed to have 1-2 spoonfuls a day.

    Howdy would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog in
    the near future but I’m having a hard time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.
