Paleo Substitutes: Ice Cream

[This blog post is a series on Paleo substitues for foods that you love to consume but aren’t Paleo friendly.]

You scream ice cream! I scream coconut milk ice cream!

Ok that doesn’t really flow well but today’s paleo substitute topic will cover everybody’s favorite dessert  ICE CREAM!

You would think going on the paleo diet, you would have to give up the delicious treat all together. I know I did and the thought made me panic so that made me search for a substitute and I was able to find a few variations. Here are some options:

Coconut Milk Ice Cream

You are in luck here because they have a few brands available.

Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss

Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss ice cream was my first time that I tried coconut milk ice cream and my favorite brand as well. They have several different flavors and you can check them here. I’ve tried cherry amaretto, ginger cookie caramel, and pineapple flavors and they were all yummy! There are several things I love about this brand besides their flavors. I love how all their ingredients used to make this ice cream is organic and all the ingredients they purchase are fair trade. Not only are Luna & Larry out to make great ice cream but good, humanitarian practices as well. You can find these Coconut Bliss ice creams at any Whole Foods, natural food grocery store or use this locator here. This brand might be a little hard to find.

So Delicious Coconut Ice Cream

The good thing about the So Delicious brand made by Turtle Mountain is that it is more widely available and you could probably get this at your local super market. Unlike Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss which you can only find at Whole Foods or a natural food grocery. This brand does have a wide variety of delicious flavors and I tried cookies ‘n cream, pomegranate chip, cookie dough, and mint chocolate chip. My only issues with So Delicious  is that I find myself gassy after I eat a pint of theirs. I can eat a pint of Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss and I would have no gassy issues. I wonder is So Delicious are adding too much of something to cause this.

Almond Milk Ice Cream

So you know you can trade up your dairy ice cream for coconut milk ice cream but if you don’t like coconut, you are still in luck. They have:

Almond Dream Ice Cream

To me Almond Dream Ice Cream tastes closest to dairy ice cream than coconut milk ice cream. For coconut ice cream, there is always that underlying coconut taste you get which I don’t mind but some of you might. Almond Dream taste like you are eating regular ice cream. I really liked this brand and I can’t wait to try the other flavors.

Couple of Final Notes

Just know,  just because these ice cream options are paleo friendly don’t think you can eat all the coconut or almond milk ice cream and think you can lean out or lose weight. Just treat these tasty options as a treat or reserve it on the weekends to indulge yourself.

And do not go for Soy based ice cream products. Remember, soy is a legume and they are not allowed on the paleo diet because generally legumes have a specific enzyme that blocks gut absorption and soy beans are phytoestrogens.

What about the sugar content in all of these? I just started the paleo diet and would like to make sure I am following it correctly.

Hi Lauren! It depends on what your goal is. If you are doing a strict paleo or looking to lean up…I would stay away from these. Just eat a small serving a fruit a day.
