Golden Era of Action Stars

These days we don’t see old school action flicks like we use to in the 80′s and 90′s. Hence the big draw and success with the first Expendables. This is a sad fact but how many kids born in the 90′s would know Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Commando,  Sylvester Stallone’s Cobra, Jean Claude Van Damme’s Universal Solider, or Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master II?

They don’t make action flicks like they use to. Not that I don’t enjoy today’s movies but there is a lot of CGI use instead of just plain old fires and explosions and people doing their own stunts and fight choreography. Even the action stars of today are not a box office draw. We got…Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Don’t get me wrong they are great actors  and they have enjoyable films but they don’t compare to Arnie and Stallone in their heyday. 80′s and 90′s action stars have a huge international fan base that today’s so called action stars don’t have and probably never have. When word came out that Stallone was making Expendables, people were buzzing all around the world and people from Bangladesh were pressing movie critics for more information!

Then we got a bunch of actors that don’t have any real expertise or background that could help them in an action flick. For example, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Dolph Lundgren, and Chuck Norris were martial artists which helped them with fight sequences.

Arnie was a bodybuilder which helped him fit into roles like Conan the Barbarian.

Now we have a bunch of actors trying to do actions flicks and sometimes it doesn’t hack it (with the exemption of a few great movies like Ip Man, Ong Bak, and The Raid).

I do miss these old school action movies and it makes me highly anticipate Expendables 2. How can you not love them? They are great because it inspires us to fight the good fight despite the insurmountable odds, defend the helpless, and rescue that pretty damsel in distress.

So the next few posts this week, I’m going to do a throw back to this movies and do a new mini blog series called “How to Look Like a 90s Action Star (Without the Steroids)”.

It is widely known that stars like Arnold and Stallone used steroids and HGH. Which is a huge advantage but it doesn’t help with hard work and discipline that you have to put into it. It’s kind of sad because I know and aware of that steroid use is rampant in professional sports today. I personally don’t believe in using them because steroids accelerates growth of other things besides muscles. I believe in doing things naturally and aging naturally.

I do believe you can look like an action star with the proper diet, work out regimen, discipline and hard work.

I’m looking forward to the posts. I hope you are!

P.S. Don’t worry I’ll pick up on the Tough Mudder work out series.
